Meet Dr. Justin Smith, MD, PhD

Dr. Justin S. Smith completed neurosurgery residency at the University of California San Francisco and has completed spine surgery fellowships in the areas of adult and pediatric spinal deformity (University of Virginia) and degenerative spine surgery (Northwestern University). He is currently a Harrison Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery in the department of neurological surgery at the University of Virginia, serves as faculty for neurosurgery residents and fellows, serves as director of the spine fellowship program and director of the UVA Spine Center.

Dr. Smith’s practice is predominantly spinal surgery and includes cervical and thoracolumbar deformity reconstruction, oncology, trauma, degenerative disease, and complex revision surgery. His research interests focus on clinical outcomes of spinal surgery, and he has published extensively in this and other areas, with more than 600 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 1,300 presented abstracts at national and international meetings.

If you need a spinal fusion there is no one better than Dr. Smith. He fused me fromore S1-T9 and used some spacers in L4-5. He got rid of my back and leg pain and I am walking pain free for the first time in years. I was told by many of my local doctors my procedure was too complex due to adult scoliosis as well. Dr. Smith was confident yet not "cocky" in his assurances he could help me. Well, he did. I'm eternally grateful for everything he has done for me. Also, he's a good person who cares.

I highly would recommend Dr. Justin Smith to anyone who would need a neurosurgeon. My father just recently had back surgery by him and he is excellent. Has a very good bed side manner, pays attention to patient detail. He is very knowledgeable and explains it to where you can understand everything. Once my father was done with surgery and was in recovery and had a few minor issues to work out the doctor and his team and the hospitals team where on it.
